About the event
SOURLAND BREADÂ is here and ready to empower you to bake our way to a better world, one loaf at a time! 🌎🥖
I have been teaching this basic beginner sourdough class for over 10 years now, to over 2,000 wonderful people, and I am happy to announce that we will be having our first Seasonal Sourdough Event where I will teach bread baking to a larger scale of individuals and where part of the class will focus on bread as a peace-making tool.
Please join us for a special event in celebration of Earth Day, on Saturday, April 20th from 1-6pm at the beautiful Cherry Grove Farm in Lawrenceville, NJ. Class itself will take place between 1:30 and 4:30 where you will have a hands-on opportunity to get elbow deep in dough -- from dry flour to baked loaf. It will be really fun, messy (in a good way), and super educational all at once.
In this class you will learn the basics. It is geared towards beginner bread bakers, but can also help those who have had some experience.
This is for both gluten free and regular sourdough bakers. We will have a separate table with separate ingredients for our GF bakers, as well as separate baking vessels, but please know that cross contamination may occur. I will have assistants helping at various tables, so everyone feels like they can ask questions.
The event will include my original sourdough class that I have been teaching for 10 years. There will be a peace offering portion, an opportunity to speak intentions into the group, and a Q & A portion where we will talk all about starter and answer any questions you may have moving forward.
Refreshments, fresh bread baked in class, and local cheese directly from Cherry Grove will be served after the class.
And following there will be an opportunity to visit the farm store, our local vendors, and purchase bread and flour from Sourland Bread, Morganics Family Farm, and Castle Valley Mill.
What will I learn?
- A step by step tutorial of how to mix whole grain dough (Why use whole grains and why local? What's the big deal with whole grains anyway?).
- What is sourdough and how can I make my own starter (and keep it alive!)?
- Learn how to shape, fold, and proof your loaf of bread (we will get sticky and messy, and that's ok!).
- How can I bake a great loaf of bread in just my home oven (don't I need a ton of time and something fancy?)?
- Learn the nutritional aspects of making bread at home with whole grains and why it is so important -- they are full of vitamins and minerals. And baking sourdough with whole grains won't make you gain weight. When they are given the right time to ferment, they can actually help you lose weight and are not inflammatory. Learn how this sourdough bread is "gluten friendly" too!
What do I leave with?
- Each attendee will leave with their own freshly milled and local whole grain flour for their sourdough starter, and their own dough that they mixed in class to bake at home.
What do I need to bring with me?
- Please bring your own glass or metal mixing bowl ideally 5 quart and a kitchen towel
- If you have your own digital scale to mix dough with, you can bring that too, but it is optional.
- You can bring an apron if you wish, but it is not required.
- We supply all other props and tools needed to participate.
- We’re excited to offer a selection of essential bread baking tools including dough scrapers, bread lames, digital scales, bannetons, loaf pans, and more. Explore our full selection here. Purchases will be delivered directly to you at the event for added convenience (kindly select event pick up at checkout). There will be items and flour for sale the day of the event as well, but to ensure you get your items, we recommend pre-ordering.
